As Samuel comes to anoint the new king of Israel, he is surprised by God’s choice of David. This initial meeting foreshadows how God will work in and through David. God is deeply concerned with people’s hearts AND will bring salvation by way of a humble and righteous king.

In order to fully understand David as the “man after God’s own heart” you have to see its opposite. King Saul is an example of a life lived in the allegiance to people’s opinions about him, and in the end, it cost him everything.
